Statement of Opportunity
We are an inner city middle school where the girls are faced with violence, self-destruction, and neglected as the norm. Being able to have a creative outlet on campus can open their minds to being educated on the importance of self-love. Understanding good character, kindness, self-confidence, and integrity will empower the girls to be an positive participant in society. Instead of going down the negative path that so many of them see as the norm. Project Need "Girls Empowering Our Community" will assist in establishing self-awareness. By the girls acknowledging and understanding the negative impact violence has on ones inner self, the girls will become driven to break the chain to violence. Many of the girls at IIMCA witness violence first hand, particularly the young ladies participating in the Girls Build LA project. The project will develop leadership skills and self-confidence in the girls, by understanding their personal story, and being confident in supporting other young ladies whom have similar stories. By the girls successfully acquiring valuable life skills they are more likely to have favorable attitudes about themselves and their life options. Anticipated Outcome The hope is that the girls will be able to tap into their creative side by learning a new skills of sewing, while learning about the balance of a healthy life-style. Meaning, they will learn stress relieving strategies, self-love, self-awareness, and leadership. The short-term goal is to have the girls build their confidence by learning a new skills; sewing, while becoming educated on what it takes to make a positive difference within their community and within themselves. At Inglewood Middle Charter Academy the young ladies are searching for a program that is inspiring and taps into their creative side. The long term goal is to have the girls develop a combination of knowledge, skills, and values to make a lasting difference in their community and within themselves. The hope is when the girls find ways to positively impact others and themselves they will contribute to the common good of their community and family— that is civic engagement, and when you are civically engaged, you are a LEADER! The student will gain self-confidence from the program, that will allow them to offer their leadership skills by encouraging others to find a positive path. |
